Need a Break from Green Tea? Try These Alternatives Instead


Green tea is no doubt healthy, but not everybody enjoys the taste. To some, it tastes a bit like drinking grass, which you can imagine won’t be fun. There are a few varieties of green tea to try such as jasmine green tea, but if you would like to take a break from it entirety and try something new, there are quite a few options out there. These teas may have different flavour profiles, but they offer as many health benefits as green tea.

What’s the fuss about tea anyway?

Numerous studies have proven the many health benefits of drinking tea. We are not going to go delve deeply into that, but some of the benefits of drinking tea include reduced risk of osteoporosis, stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Tea is even said to be a shield against the common cold. There is also the undeniable weight loss benefit of green tea.

What else is out there?

  • Black tea


Black tea is even more popular than green tea. Its brew is not black of course, but the name comes from the colour of the leaves. There are many different varieties of black tea, with flavours ranging from flowery too spicy.

Black tea has a high caffeine content, higher than green tea, and it is typically used as the basis for flavoured teas. Black tea is thought of as being able to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and colon cancer. It also inhibits the bacteria that cause bad breath and cavities. Another interesting benefit of black tea is that it might protect the lungs from the complications that may arise from exposure to cigarette smoke.

  • Oolong tea

Oolong tea is somewhere in between black tea and green tea in terms of flavour, colour, and antioxidant action. Its aroma is a fresh floral or fruity one. One study has found that antioxidants from the tea may lower bad cholesterol levels.

There is a variety of oolong tea called Wuyi, which some claim is a good weight loss supplement, however, this has not been proven. If you are out for something that is not as grassy as green tea or as bitter as black tea, then this is the one for you. Oolong tea has been connected with a reduction in skin problems such as rushes, as well as improvements in antioxidants levels.

  • Pu-Erh tea

Pu-Erh is a dark red tea that may remind you of tobacco and coffee due to its earthy flavour. In China, it is considered a delicacy and the method of processing it is kept a secret. Even if it is not made in your country, you can buy it online.


Pu-Erh tea is made from aged tea leaves that are fermented. It is the most oxidized of teas and is said to be like wine because it mellows and improves with age. Pu-Erh tea is said to reduce cholesterol and may prevent weight gain.

  • White tea

It won’t be surprising if you have never heard of white tea before. That is because it is quite rare and expensive. It is the least processed tea and has a very subtle flavour. In terms of benefits, it packs on more antioxidants than other teas and has been found to block DNA mutations that trigger formation of tumours.


One study found that white tea has very potent anticancer properties when compared to other teas because it is not as processed. In another study, it was found to prevent precancerous colon tumours.

White tea leaves actually come from the same tea plant as green tea, Camellia Sinensis. However, the white leaves are harvested at a younger age than the green ones. White tea is handled with care, being handpicked within a few days of early spring. It has a gentler, smoother taste that is almost sweet.

Herbal teas

Herbal teasIf you are not too keen on any of the teas above, you might want to try herbal teas. Herbal teas are made from herbs, roots, seeds, or fruits steeped in hot water. They don’t have as many antioxidants as any of the other teas, but they offer unique health benefits. While the research on the health benefits of herbal teas is not extensive, some findings suggest that they help improve sleep, stave off colds, and shed weight. Some commonly known herbal teas include ginger, jasmine, hibiscus, chamomile, ginseng, rosehip, and mint, among others.

There is no rule saying that you should stick to only one tea, so try them all!
